When he saw the crowds, he had compassion on them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. (Matt. 9:36)

You will always have an excuse to justify not getting involved in other people’s lives. When you see someone in need, just get ready for that conversation in your head because you will always have an excuse. “I wish I could help, but I’m running late. And I don’t know these people. I’ve got so much going on already. What if I helped them out today and they turned out to be super needy? Plus, I just don’t have time for anymore ongoing relationships.”

Sound familiar? Yes, we’re all so busy with hectic schedules and lots of demands on our time, energy, and resources. Yes, it’s inconvenient and means letting go of our plans and agenda. Yes, it’s what Jesus did over and over again—seeing others in need and loving them, healing them, helping them, listening to them.

The conversation in your head will likely keep playing, but to say that we care and yet not act is not to care at all. And we are called to care so deeply that we have to act. Jesus never turned away from anyone who needed him.

Compassion often will interrupt your schedule. So ask yourself, do you want to be on time to your next appointment? Or do you want to be more like Jesus?

I get so busy, Lord, that I often overlook the people who are hurting around me. Today give me eyes to see the needs of others instead of focusing on my own agenda.
