Daily Power #248

Catch for us the foxes, the little foxes that ruin the vineyards, our vineyards that are in bloom. (Song of Songs 2:15)

Recently at church we were attempting to record an important video message for our services. Several camera guys had worked hard to create the perfect set in a small confined studio. The backdrop perfectly complimented the communication theme, and the lights were strategically placed.

After reviewing our carefully constructed plan, the director said, “Take One . . . and rolling.” At his cue, I started talking confidently into the camera. Within a couple seconds, a fly buzzed by, so the director said, “Cut!” not wanting the fly in the shot.

A few minutes later, we started “Take Two.” As if on cue, I was barely into my second line when the annoying fly zoomed back into the shot. After several failed attempts to shoot one scene, all halted by this cunning fly, we changed our strategy. Instead of trying to shoot the clip, we decided to try to kill the fly!

Talk about slapstick comedy; for probably close to an hour, a roomful of people swatted, clapped, slapped, and swooshed after one stupid fly. None of us were able to make the kill. So we finally admitted defeat, packed up the gear, and called it a day.

It’s still hard to believe that one small fly kept us from reaching our goal. But truthfully, it’s often the small distractions that hurt us the most. Perhaps today you are distracted by ongoing worry, another’s offense, a looming project, financial pressure, or a broken gadget.

Remember, it’s just a small thing. Don’t let the small things keep you from pursuing the big things.
