Daily Power #249

Daily Power #249

“In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” (John 16:33)

It’s really hard not to look at our friends’ status updates and latest posted photos and not be envious. Their grass looks so much greener than our latest, tired retweet. We think, “If I only had a job like they have, then I could go on those kind of trips too. If my spouse were as understanding as theirs, then our marriage would be just as great. If I’d finished my degree, then I would be on track for that promotion.”

If only, if only, if only.

When we live conditionally, comparing and envying what everyone around us seems to have that we don’t, then we’re setting ourselves up for frustration and not faith. Living in the “if only” moments requires us to hit Pause and overlook all that God has given us in the present. Instead of embracing the many blessings we have and the stewardship they require, we spin our wheels and feel discouraged by our perceived inadequacies.

The truth is that you have everything you need for right now. God provides, equips, and empowers you and won’t call you to something you’re not ready to handle. You often won’t feel ready, but you are. Jesus has overcome the world, including your own tendency to envy others rather than give thanks for what you have.

Power Lift

Help me resist the temptations to live conditionally, Lord. I’m so grateful to have all I need today and for the confidence that you’ve already overcome all I’m facing.
