Daily Power #351

Daily Power #351

For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. (Isa. 9:6)

When we were expecting each of our children, Amy and I would pick out a name, usually one for a girl and one for a boy, and then wait until after the birth for the final decision. We waited because there was always the chance that our baby didn’t look like the name we were considering. Sounds funny, but there’s something about someone so little having to be called by a name that sounds so grown-up. We just wanted to be sure that our little person and his or her name actually fit.

Christ also experienced being born into some big names. The angel had already told Mary to name her baby Jesus, but because the Jewish people had been waiting so long for their Messiah, other names were already established for the one who would save God’s people. Some names emphasized God’s ability to provide or his perfect holiness, while others indicated his power, peace, or righteousness.

The prophet Isaiah foretold the birth of Christ and revealed names that God’s Son would be called, all reflecting different aspects of his character. Interestingly enough, though, they all indicate the perfect holiness of God: Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

Jesus continues to reveal himself in these roles to us today, demonstrating his power, love, and peace in countless ways.
