Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. (2 Cor. 9:7)

Shopping for Christmas gifts has changed considerably over the past few years. Like most people, I used to fight the crowds at the mall. Now, online shopping has made the experience much easier. Not only is it easier to find exactly what you want, but it’s also easier to get a bit more out of control with your purchases.

As you are busy shopping, think for a moment about what types of gifts you most want to give. Rather than just giving sweaters, gift cards, and video games, think about how you can give more of yourself. Perhaps you can commit to having dinner each week with those you love. Maybe you will make a private decision to spend less time on social media and engage more with your kids. Maybe the best gift you could give is the gift of encouragement. Your words have power. Your affirmation can change lives.

Get creative in what you give. Spending money is usually relatively easy. Making something takes time. Being creative shows thought. Personalizing something communicates love.

Think about the gift God gave. God didn’t shout his love from heaven. He sent his Son to show it on earth. Instead of just giving like most give, perhaps you can give more of yourself. And discover just how blessed you are when you do.

Thank you, Lord, for reminding me that it’s more blessed to give than to receive. As I finish my shopping, guide me to the presents that will let my loved ones know how much I appreciate them.
