Daily Power #356

“Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests.” (Luke 2:14)

I’m not the greatest singer, but at this time of year, you’d think I was Perry Como or Josh Groban. I love the music of Christmas and the special memories associated with certain songs and carols. I mean, can anyone really hear that jazzy music from A Charlie Brown Christmas and not start tapping your foot and dancing like Snoopy? Or hear carolers in your neighborhood singing “Joy to the World” and not want to sing along?

It used to bug me that certain stores, malls, and radio stations start playing Christmas music before Halloween. But then one day, I realized those songs and their lyrics are no less beautiful and meaningful just because I heard them in November instead of December. The story of Jesus’ birth is timeless, and we should celebrate it every day.

And as we see in the nativity story from Luke, the angels certainly knew how to celebrate this momentous occasion. Their chorus filled the night skies over Bethlehem as they proclaimed the most joyful news anyone on earth has ever heard. While musical instruments and praise songs were around long before the birth of Christ, surely the angels’ song created a lasting precedent for the carols and hymns we love to sing at Christmas time.

Today keep a song in your heart as you celebrate the birth of your Savior, Jesus Christ!
