How can confession bring about renewal in my life?

A MOMENT with GOD

When I refused to confess my sin, my body wasted away, and I groaned all day long. Day and night your hand of discipline was heavy on me. My strength evaporated like water in the summer heat. Finally, I confessed all my sins to you and stopped trying to hide my guilt. I said to myself, “I will confess . . . to the Lord.” And you forgave me! All my guilt is gone.

Psalm 32:3-5

Sin often has magnified effects in the life of a leader, perhaps because leaders feel reluctant to admit when they are struggling with it. If you do not talk about this struggle with God or other people, you allow sin to fester. It distracts you, saps your energy, and causes you to feel listless and uninspired. Leaders need renewal as much as anyone. One of the first steps toward renewal is confession. Confession means being humble and honest with God and sincerely sorry for your sins—both the ones you know about and the ones you are unaware of. Confession brings God’s forgiveness and restores your relationship with him. This renews your strength and spirit, rekindling your sense of passion for your work and compassion for those you lead. When you confess your sin, God removes your guilt, restores your joy, turns you in the right direction, and heals your broken soul (and leaders often struggle with a broken soul). A heart that truly confesses is ready for the renewal that only God’s Spirit can bring.
