Is it possible to exercise control without being controlling?

A MOMENT with GOD

Now listen! Today I am giving you a choice between life and death, between prosperity and disaster. For I command you this day to love the Lord your God and to keep his commands. . . . If you do this, you will live and multiply, and the Lord your God will bless you and the land you are about to enter and occupy. But if your heart turns away and you refuse to listen, and if you are drawn away to serve and worship other gods, then I warn you now that you will certainly be destroyed.

Leaders are responsible for people without taking responsibility from them. In other words, leaders should lead and guide, but the people they are leading should do for themselves those things they are responsible for. This is being in control without being controlling. Moses did all he could to persuade the Israelites to choose to live by God’s commands, but in the end he knew that the choice was theirs to make. If you are a leader in any capacity—parent, teacher, supervisor, church elder, board member—you have the responsibility to lead by doing and saying everything you can to persuade others to move in the right direction. After you have done your best to guide others, you must let go and trust God to complete the work he asked you to start.
