Why does my character matter?

A MOMENT with GOD

Suppose a certain man is righteous and does what is just and right. . . . He does not commit adultery. . . . He is a merciful creditor. . . . He does not rob the poor but instead gives food to the hungry and provides clothes for the needy. He grants loans without interest, stays away from injustice, is honest and fair when judging others, and faithfully obeys my decrees and regulations. Anyone who does these things is just and will surely live, says the Sovereign Lord.

Ezekiel 18:5-9

The Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.

Galatians 5:22-23

That elusive thing called character is who you really are—the sum total of everything that distinguishes you as a person from everyone else. Your reputation—what other people say about you—is often a good indication of your character. If you overheard two people talking about you, what would they be saying? Character is what you are, but it is also what you desire to become. Ultimately, your character is the mark you make on the world. If you are striving for good character—better yet, for godly character—you are working toward moral excellence. Think of all the areas in your life, such as your career or hobbies, in which you’ve worked hard to develop excellence. Doesn’t it make sense, then, to work hard at becoming morally excellent and mastering the things that really matter, such as integrity, kindness, love, and faithfulness? You can do that by asking God to work through you as you relate to others.
