How can I teach my child about God’s ways?

I’ve also done it so you can tell your children and grandchildren about how I made a mockery of the Egyptians and about the signs I displayed among them—and so you will know that I am the LORD.

[Moses said,] “Commit yourselves wholeheartedly to these words of mine. Tie them to your hands and wear them on your forehead as reminders. Teach them to your children. Talk about them when you are at home and when you are on the road, when you are going to bed and when you are getting up.”

Joshua said to the Israelites, “In the future your children will ask, ‘What do these stones mean?’ Then you can tell them, ‘This is where the Israelites crossed the Jordan on dry ground.’”

God wants you to teach your children about him. One way to do this is to respond to a child’s natural curiosity to God. When your child asks about a tree or a caterpillar, be ready to turn that question into a teaching moment. Explain how a tree or caterpillar or any creation is a gift from God the Creator. God commanded the Israelites to set up a memorial that would attract a child’s curiosity and create teaching moments for the Israelite parents. You can create teaching moments for your children by setting up reminders of God in your home. These give you opportunities to share with your children about what God has done in your life and what he is doing in your child’s life. The next time your child asks you to tell a story, share a time when God has worked in your life, blessed you, or forgiven you. This will show that God is real and willing to work in your children’s lives as well.
