Emotions

My Question for God

How does the power of God help me to control my emotions?

A Moment with God

Guard your heart above all else, for it determines the course of your life.

Proverbs 4:23

I will give you a new heart, and I will put a new spirit in you.

Ezekiel 36:26

Let the Spirit renew your thoughts and attitudes.

Ephesians 4:23

Emotions are a good gift from God. They are evidence that you are made in God’s image, for the Bible shows God displaying the whole range of emotions from anger to zeal. But like any gift from God, emotions can be misused. Instead of a blessing, they can become a curse. Emotions come from the heart, where there is a desperate battle going on between your old and new natures. Your heart gets caught in a tug-of-war between your emotions. Your new nature helps you use your emotions to reflect his character, which will help you love people in healthy ways. Your sinful nature, however, tries to get you to redirect and lose control of your emotions so that you lapse into behavior that is harmful to yourself and others. Emotions gone bad tempt you to impulsively seek the pleasures of sin. For example, the same emotion—love—can be a powerful force for good when it cares for someone in need. But it can be a powerful force for evil if it is allowed to turn into lust or jealous rage. Learn to understand your emotions and direct them in ways that are productive, not destructive. The issue isn’t the power or intensity of the emotion, but what it leads you to do.
