How can I learn patience?

A Moment with God

The Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience.

Galatians 5:22

Contrary to popular opinion, patience is not merely a personality trait. It is a by-product of the presence and work of God in your heart. Achieving worthwhile goals is rarely accomplished in a quantum leap. Learning to be more patient comes from taking small, faithful steps day by day.

Because of his glory and excellence, he has given us great and precious promises. These are the promises that enable you to share his divine nature and escape the world’s corruption caused by human desires. In view of all this, make every effort to respond to God’s promises. Supplement your faith with a generous provision of moral excellence, and moral excellence with knowledge, and knowledge with self-control, and self-control with patient endurance, and patient endurance with godliness, and godliness with brotherly affection, and brotherly affection with love for everyone.

2 Peter 1:4-7

Patience comes through perseverance and endurance, and it allows you to respond to frustrating circumstances with grace and self-control.

I waited patiently for the LORD to help me, and he turned to me and heard my cry.

Psalm 40:1

Patience comes from having a solid hope in God’s plans, especially his eternal plans for you. When you know that your long-range future is settled and secure, you can be more patient during today’s frustrations.

Consider the farmers who patiently wait for the rains in the fall and in the spring. They eagerly look for the valuable harvest to ripen.

James 5:7-8

Whether you’re waiting for crops to ripen, a traffic jam to unsnarl, a child to mature, or God to perfect you, you can grow in patience by recognizing that these things take time and that there is very little you can do to speed them up. A key to understanding God’s will is to understand God’s timing.

Divine Promise

Patient endurance is what you need now, so that you will continue to do God’s will. Then you will receive all that he has promised.
