Hold Your Peace

The Lord shall fight for you, and ye shall hold your peace.

When a serious conflict arose within the church that Maggie and her husband pastored, they did their best to resolve it. One individual resisted all their efforts. They reached out to him, but he twisted their words and used them against the couple. Every attempt toward resolution made matters worse, and the situation led to litigation.

Maggie sought hope and direction in God’s Word. He impressed Exodus 14:14 on her heart. In context, Moses spoke these words to the panicked Israelites as they stood between the Red Sea and the Egyptian army. They felt certain the enemy would destroy them, but God reassured them that he would fight for them. They only needed to be silent. Maggie felt God giving her the same directive. He would be their advocate. Peace would reign if they held their peace.

That’s easier said than done when our reputation is being destroyed. Or when others lie about us. Or when someone makes wrong assumptions about us and treats us accordingly. Our tendency is to defend ourselves, but God says otherwise. Stay calm, and let him fight the battle.
