Treasures In Darkness

I will give you hidden treasures, riches stored in secret places, so that you may know that I am the Lord,
the God of Israel, who summons you by name.

My husband and I took our youngest daughter caving one summer afternoon. We donned safety helmets with headlamps and then kissed the sunshine goodbye to descend into the damp darkness behind an experienced guide. This tested my grit. At times, rocks narrowed the route and forced us to squeeze through vertical passageways. Other times, we crawled. This was more challenging than I’d expected, and I began wishing I’d remained behind.

My attitude changed when we reached a cave filled with crystals. They sparkled like colored glass in our headlamps’ light. Their beauty was unlike anything I’d ever seen. And to think I wished I’d stayed in a more comfortable place.

God has hidden treasures for us, but the route to experiencing their beauty is never easy. It takes us from our comfortable place into the dark, but we needn’t fear because he’s our guide. Stay close to him. Don’t give up even when the way becomes difficult. The beauty that awaits will be worth it all.
