Wisdom

If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God,
that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.

James 1:5 kjv

Pause

“God, help! I don’t know what to do.” This was my plea when a treasured relationship broke. I wanted to talk it out, but the individual involved shut me out. My heart ripped, I felt, beyond repair. I needed wisdom—lots of it—to know how to respond.

Difficult situations require insight, but often our supply is insufficient. Thankfully we don’t have to operate from our deficit. God commands us to ask—respectfully demand—that he give us what’s needed to understand or make good decisions in life’s hard places. But there’s one caveat. The words “of God” imply an intimate coming alongside him. We’re not to rush into his presence like a stranger asking for favors. He wants us to draw near and ask from a place of deep friendship and trust.

The word “giveth” implies one who habitually gives. When we meet the caveat, God never withholds his help. He opens his hand and generously answers our questions.
