Deeply Rooted - In the Evening When I Rest
Deeply Rooted
Lord, what is making me feel so unsettled?
The human heart is the most deceitful of all things, and desperately wicked. Who really knows how bad it is? Do not waver, for a person with divided loyalty is as unsettled as a wave of the sea that is blown and tossed by the wind. Such people should not expect to receive anything from me. Their loyalty is divided between me and the world, and they are unstable in everything they do. If you are wise and understand my ways, prove it by living an honorable life, doing good works with the humility that comes from wisdom. Wickedness never brings stability, but the godly have deep roots.
Jeremiah 17:9; James 1:6-8; James 3:13; Proverbs 12:3
How do I grow strong and settled in my faith?
Be still in my presence, and wait patiently for me to act. Put your hope in me. Travel steadily along my path. Commit everything you do to me. Trust me, and I will help you.
Psalm 37:7; Psalm 37:34; Psalm 37:5
What can I pray when I feel out of control?
Let my roots grow down into you, and let my life be built on you. Then my faith will grow strong in the truth I’ve been taught, and I will overflow with thankfulness.
Colossians 2:7
When do you feel conflicted over competing desires? It is unsettling when your loyalties are at odds or divided. The Bible speaks about setting your mind and heart on the Lord. Committing your life to God and staying loyal to his commands makes you like a tree with deep roots, nurturing your faith to grow stronger and more stable. Take a “heart inventory” this evening. Do you feel deeply rooted? Or do you feel tossed about by waves of divided loyalty? Read the prayer again and choose in this moment to trust the Lord in the places where your desires are in conflict with his.
