The kingdom of heaven is like a merchant seeking fine pearls, and upon finding one pearl of great value, he went and sold all that he had and bought it.

A COUPLE OF WEEKS AGO, Sarah invited friends to our home, where she shared with them some things she’d been studying about beauty. Beauty is one of the attributes of God we see in creation. There is something in God’s very nature that must express itself in beauty.

Both mothers and daughters attended, and we all had lots of fun together. Each person had to bring something she thought was beautiful and tell a story about it. One of my favorites was a beautiful piece of framed embroidery that the husband of one of the moms had made for her when they were in high school! Under each woman’s luncheon plate, Sarah had placed a slip of paper bearing a quotation about beauty, which we shared with one another.

Finally, Sarah read a beautiful passage from The Secret Garden. When Colin, the crippled protagonist of the story, is finally wheeled into the secret garden his two friends have prepared for him, he marvels breathlessly at the beauty of it. Then he says, “I shall get well! And I shall live forever and ever and ever!” Sarah then talked to us about the intrinsic beauty God has placed in our souls —the way we are all able to reflect Him in our lives; the way we live, the way we serve, the way we dress —along with a reminder that when we subdue and create an atmosphere of beauty and creativity in our homes, we give one more testimony of His reality in our lives. The end of the gathering was even better than the beginning, because Sarah had made a lemon cake with raspberry filling for dessert!

She also gave each daughter a real pearl necklace. Jesus, the Author of beauty, is the Pearl of great price —the only One worth giving up everything for.
