The Guide

Lead me by your truth and teach me, for you are the God who saves me. All day long I put my hope in you.

When we married twenty years ago, Don and I went to Europe for our honeymoon. Our trip coincided with a visit to his company’s headquarters in Switzerland.

We decided to map out our own trip, rent a car, and drive through the countryside, stopping at little inns along the way. No planned group trip for us!

When we landed in Frankfurt, I was immediately struck by every difference. The air smelled different. The customs were different. The language, food, money, and street layouts—all different.

We learned the hard way that if you didn’t get your money converted at a bank before Friday’s closing time, you were without cash for the weekend (this was twenty years ago). Some places wouldn’t take a credit card, and no amount of pleading and flashing of the plastic could gain us access to a cash-only inn.

When ordering at a restaurant, we could only point at menu items hoping they were something we would want to eat. Loud talking and pantomimes didn’t help anyone understand us. We vowed to learn to speak German and French fluently as soon as we got home.

We also got hopelessly lost a few times. No amount of logic or intellect could help us figure out the street layouts. I actually said to my husband, “We’re lost! Our families will never see us again!”

We needed a guide. And in our daily lives, here on earth, we need the Guide. Our earthly currency of sin and selfishness will never gain us entry into God’s Kingdom. Our logic can’t help us become more Christlike. Our language of busyness and materialism is not the King’s language of love and sacrifice.

Listen to God, our everlasting Guide. He is trustworthy and true, and you’ll never lose your way. Depend on Jesus—our source of salvation is also our road map. He will help us navigate the confusing paths of this life until we are safely home with Him.
