You’ll Get Through

Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God.

I saw an old friend last week, and as we caught up, she told me about her job, a temporary one, and her living situation, a temporary one. She lost her job earlier this year, and that loss hasn’t yet worked its way out of her life. She’s one of the most joyful, exuberant people I know, but I could tell she was exhausted and scared, and that this season has been a heartbreaking one.

Oh, I get it, I told her. I get where you are right now. I know what it’s like to long for a new year, to feel like everything’s on hold and you don’t recognize your own life even though it’s right in front of you. I know what it’s like when the things that always used to make you happy don’t do the trick anymore, because they can’t break through the sadness and fear that are covering over everything in your life.

I was there, I said, and I’m not there anymore, and I’m so thankful. You’ll get through this, and you’ll find yourself in an entirely new place. You’ll find your old self again. You’ll laugh easily and sleep well. It will happen. I promise.
