Choosing the Hard Life

What is faith? According to Hebrews 11:1, “Faith is the confidence that what we hope for will actually happen; it gives us assurance about things we cannot see.” The heroes of the faith listed in Hebrews 11, and many others who aren’t named, believed what God promised them would happen even when they couldn’t see obvious answers or rewards.

That kind of faith led them to be able to do things that were hard or didn’t make sense at the time. It allowed them to follow God while being able to see only a small part of his plan.

Faith played a role in Moses’ life from his birth. His parents are also listed in the Hall of Faith in Hebrews: “It was by faith that Moses’ parents hid him for three months when he was born. They saw that God had given them an unusual child, and they were not afraid to disobey the king’s command” (Hebrews 11:23).

Faith led Moses to leave his life of luxury in the Egyptian pharaoh’s palace and join his own people. He traded what was familiar and comfortable for a hard and sometimes dangerous life. (You can read more about Moses in the February 8–23 and March 5–22 devotions.) Faith leads people to take the right road whether it’s the more difficult road or not.

For You

Moses walked away from the easy life to follow God. Are you willing to step out for God even if it means making hard choices or standing alone? Ask God to help you to be able to do the right thing even when it’s the harder thing to do.
