The Bible talks about the fruit of the Spirit, which are characteristics evident in believers’ lives when they allow God’s Spirit to work in them. You can’t show this fruit in your own power. It comes from listening to and obeying the Spirit’s voice. The results are a life filled with the following:

• Love. Only with the Holy Spirit’s help can you love God, yourself, your neighbors, fellow believers, and even your enemies.
• Joy. Even when things go wrong, and you don’t feel happy, you can still be filled with the joy of the Lord. Joy doesn’t depend on what happens around you but on Jesus.
• Peace. The peace the Holy Spirit gives will keep you calm on the inside no matter what’s happening on the outside, because you know that God is in control.
• Patience. The Holy Spirit will keep you calm in trying situations. He can help you keep your cool all the time.
• Kindness. Jesus perfectly modeled being gracious and caring, and the Holy Spirit can help you do the same.
• Goodness. A Christlike goodness helps Christians live right and be positive role models to others. This will draw people to you and to God.
• Faithfulness. The Holy Spirit helps you be steadfast, dedicated, and dependable, just as God is.
• Gentleness. This isn’t weakness. Rather, it’s controlled strength, which allows you to be tender.
• Self-control. Being able to restrain yourself from impulsive actions or from just doing what you want is a true sign of God’s Spirit working in you.

Do you see these fruits in your own life? If not, listen to God’s Spirit as he prompts you to obey and live for the Lord. Take time to think about how each fruit would look if it were more evident in your life.
