Two Men Freed

Q: When Jesus cast many demons out of two men, where did the demons ask to be sent?

Jesus and the disciples had sailed across the Sea of Galilee to the other side. When Jesus got out of the boat, two demon-possessed men came out to meet him. These men normally ran among tombs like wild animals, naked and out of control. All the people were afraid of them. It seemed there was no hope for the men.

The two men ran to Jesus and fell at his feet. The demons possessing the men recognized Jesus. They asked not to be sent into the abyss, but to be allowed to go into a herd of pigs nearby. To the Jews, pigs were unclean animals that could not be touched or eaten.

Jesus sent the demons into the pigs, and the herd plunged down the hillside into the water and drowned. When the herdsmen responsible for the pigs saw this, they ran into town telling everyone what had happened. They probably didn’t want to be responsible for the loss.

The two men who were now healed from demon possession wanted to follow Jesus, but Jesus sent them back to their own homes so they could share what had happened to them with their own families and their community.

For You

Jesus delivered the two men, and they wanted to follow him. But Jesus had different plans. He sent them back to their own community as witnesses there. God needs some people to travel to foreign countries with the gospel, but he also needs people who will be witnesses right where they are. Why not make your school or your neighborhood your mission field?
