Don’t Listen To The Lies

Don’t Listen to the Lies

The thief’s purpose is to steal and kill and destroy. My purpose is to give them a rich and satisfying life.

John 10:10

We were getting ready for a large event in our community, and I was helping to coordinate the program. The week leading up to the gathering of women was filled with last-minute details and texts to make sure everything would be ready to go. Throughout the week, a small voice was whispering in the back of my mind, saying things like, You’re not really needed there; no one would notice if you didn’t help out; they’ve got other people more qualified. On and on the negative thoughts continued. I brushed them aside, but the feeling of inadequacy and insecurity lingered.

On the morning of the event, we gathered together as a leadership team. As we mentioned prayer requests, I shared honestly about the thoughts that had been assailing my mind all week. The coordinator of the event listened intently and then looked me in the eye. “Those are lies meant to discourage and distract you,” she stated. “You are needed and wanted here. Don’t listen to those lies.” Suddenly, her words affirmed what I knew to be true but had a hard time believing when I was by myself. Community made all the difference.

Our enemy, the devil, is always scheming to tear us down. One way he accomplishes his purpose is by isolating us and making us feel like we are all alone, because that is when we are most vulnerable to believing the lies he tells us. When we are in community with one another and can honestly share the things we are struggling through, our friends can offer us truth and encouragement in the midst of all we are facing—reminding us of the abundance Jesus wants to give us. Sometimes we need to get around other people to hear what is true.
