Grateful For The Help

Grateful for the Help

God has given each of you a gift from his great variety of spiritual gifts. Use them well to serve one another.

1 Peter 4:10

When I arrived, she was sitting by the practice room, sewing kit out. Relieved, I sat down next to her.

“You have no idea what this means to me,” I said as I started to pull my daughter Jasmine’s dance costumes out of a bag.

“It’s no problem at all,” Staci said with a laugh as she set to work on the first of several outfits. I’d texted her earlier in the day, asking for her help. Staci has many giftings, one of which is being a seamstress, and since I can barely sew a button on a shirt, I knew I’d need her assistance before the competition season started.

We sat and chatted while she worked. Jasmine tried on each costume, and Staci made adjustments as needed. It took a few hours, and as we said our goodbyes, I left relieved to have it all done in just one sitting. What Staci saw as no big deal was massive to me, as one who couldn’t have done the alterations on my own. I’m grateful for a friend who has strengths that I do not.

Peter reminds us that God has uniquely gifted each of us and that we should use our gifts to serve others. I think this applies to our natural abilities as well as our spiritual gifting. What unique talents do you have? Are you someone who loves to invite others into your home or circle of friends? Are you an encourager? An excellent planner or gift giver? Maybe like Staci, you have a talent that could be shared with others. No matter what our gifts and talents are (and we all have something!), we can use them to love and help those around us. We aren’t to hoard our gifts, only using them for ourselves, but to generously serve others with them. They are meant to be given and received. Let’s thankfully acknowledge the abilities God’s given to us while also recognizing the gifts of those around us.
