Focus Of A Follower

THE GUYS WERE EAGER TO get to the hunting lodge for a weekend in the woods. Eric and Shawn were the two drivers, with Eric in the lead because Shawn didn’t know the way. Everything was going great until Shawn got caught up in a conversation with one of his passengers and didn’t notice that Eric was taking the off-ramp to a different highway. After driving for miles trying to “catch up,” Shawn finally had to admit he was lost and pulled over to call Eric on his cell phone.

When we’re headed somewhere and don’t know the way, we must pay close attention to our leader or we may never reach our goal. Spiritually, it is imperative that we keep our eyes on the one we’re following—Jesus. Remember the story of Peter walking on water? When Peter wanted to do what Jesus was doing, Jesus told him, “Come!” (Matthew 14:29, HCSB). The minute Peter took his eyes off Jesus and looked at the water, he began to sink.

To make sure we stay on the right spiritual path, we have to recognize Jesus by knowing Him through His Word, by keeping our eyes and hearts focused intently on Him, and by avoiding all the distractions and pitfalls that could get us off the path. We’re in a race, and the only way to run well is to keep our eyes fixed on Jesus.
