[Jesus] came to Nazareth, where He had been brought up. As usual, He entered the synagogue on the Sabbath day and stood up to read.

IN HIS BOOK Just Like Jesus, Max Lucado writes, “God loves you just the way you are, but he refuses to leave you that way. He wants you to be just like Jesus.” Becoming more Christlike takes understanding, encouragement, and time. Some transformation can be worked out through personal Bible study and prayer. However, a key element of true life change can come only through participation in the church.

The teaching of a godly pastor and the accountability found in relationships with other Christians help us move forward in our journey to become more like Jesus. If you don’t feel as if your life is being changed by attending church, pray about how God might want you to become more involved in the church by investing in the lives of others. But don’t stop attending. God’s Word instructs us numerous times to gather with other believers. It benefits us and is also good for the body of Christ.

Luke 4:16 tells us that Jesus regularly went to the synagogue. He understood everything about God and His Word, yet He still went to synagogue. If Jesus thought it necessary to worship with God’s people each week, then so should we. And we should not be afraid to invite others to come with us.

BOTTOM LINE

We should attend church with anticipation, expecting that it will change us to be more like Jesus.
