Nothing’s Going Right

I pour out my complaints before him and tell him all my troubles.

WE’VE ALL EXPERIENCED those times when nothing seems to go right. We might have a major, life-changing issue thrown at us—such as an illness or a change in a relationship—or just a bunch of minor, everyday annoyances. Whatever the case may be, it’s sometimes easy to get the feeling that there’s no way out of the difficulty we’re in.

For those who have never been through the kind of agony caused by the death of a child or a cancer diagnosis, it’s almost impossible to comprehend such a thing. But we all know what it’s like to experience one crazy irritation after another. A flat tire. A leaky roof. An annoying headache. We almost can’t help but feel sorry for ourselves.

We’re certainly not alone. Check out Psalm 142, which describes David’s experience while seeking refuge from Saul in a cave, cut off from the rest of the world. His words of praise in such a difficult time serve as an inspiration during our own times of difficulty. In verse 5, David says, “I pray to you, O LORD. I say, ‘You are my place of refuge. You are all I really want in life.’”

When it seems as if our world has spun completely out of control, that’s precisely the time to turn control over to God. That might sound like a cliché or a Sunday school kind of answer, but it’s the right answer. And sometimes it’s all we can do. Jesus is far bigger than our biggest problems.

BOTTOM LINE

Forget about the old saying, “When the going gets tough, the tough get going.” When the going gets tough, the tough call on God for strength and protection.
