Your Children’s Children

Grandchildren are the crown of the elderly.

Proverbs 17:6, HCSB

YEARS AGO, a father arrived to pick up his children at the grandparents’ house. Neither of the young boys was very happy about it, and they proceeded to kick up a fuss as their dad struggled to fasten them into their car seats. Frustrated, the dad asked, “Would you rather just stay here and live with Nanny and Papaw?”

Turns out that was a mistake. (Note to self: Don’t ask a question that you might not want to hear the answer to.)

Up they came out of their car seats once more. Turns out there was nothing in the world like Nanny and Papaw, who loved them, fed them, and spoiled them just a little bit. The boys hadn’t considered that living with their grandparents might be an option. Years later, their dad still couldn’t help but laugh at the memory.

There’s nothing quite like the relationship between grandparents and grandchildren, is there? Grandparents who have reached retirement age have more time to devote to their grandchildren, and that’s obviously a huge plus. And maybe they’re more lenient than they were with their own kids.

Whatever the case may be, grandchildren can be some of God’s greatest gifts. First, it means that the grandparents have lived long enough to see their grandchildren. Even more important is the blessing that grandchildren and grandparents are to each other. What better gift could there be than to build a legacy of faith with future generations?

BOTTOM LINE

Grandkids are awesome! Love them and have fun with them, all the while giving them a foundation of faith in Christ.
