The Name Craze (Part 1)

(Read Revelation 20:12-15; 21:2, 27)

Kendra used to like having a name that was different from any other in school, but not anymore. Some of the girls had pencils with their names on them. Julia had a notebook with her name printed on it, and Susan even had shoestrings with her name on them. Kendra wanted something with her name printed on it, too, but she couldn’t find anything at all. “You might as well give up looking, Kendra,” advised Mother after one shopping trip. “I’m afraid you won’t find your name on anything.”

Kendra sighed. “What does my name mean, Mom?” she asked. “Jan’s name means ‘beloved of God.’ I’d like to at least know what my name means.”

“I don’t know, honey. We just liked the name, so we gave it to you.”

“Well, I wish I had a normal name,” complained Kendra. “I’d love a notebook with my name on it like Julia has.”

“I guess it would be nice to have a notebook with your name printed on it,” Mother agreed. “But there’s another book—a much more important one—with your name in it.”

Kendra looked at Mother in surprise. “There is?”

Mother smiled. “You’ve accepted Jesus as your Savior, haven’t you?” Kendra nodded, and Mother continued. “Then your name is written in heaven, in the Lamb’s Book of Life,” she said. “And that’s important because only those whose names are written in that Book will go to live in heaven.”

Kendra looked thoughtful. Then she grinned. “Yeah,” she said, “and that’s better than having my name on things like notebooks or shoestrings, isn’t it? Those things will wear out, but having my name in the Book of Life is forever!” REP

HOW ABOUT YOU?

Can you find your name on notebooks, stickers, or other things? These things are fun, but they’re not forever things. It’s much more important to have your name in the Book of Life. You can do this by becoming a Christian.
