The Name Craze (Part 2)

(Read Isaiah 43:1; John 10:3; Revelation 3:5)

As Kendra waited for the morning church service to start, she nudged her mother. “Look!” She pointed to the church bulletin. Mother smiled as she saw the title of the evening sermon—“The Name Craze.”

That evening, Kendra smiled and nodded when Pastor Davis began his message by pointing out that it’s important to have your name written in the Book of Life. She was so glad her name was there. I still wish I knew what the meaning of my name was, though, she thought.

Suddenly Kendra realized that Pastor Davis was talking about that very thing. “Maybe your name doesn’t seem to have a meaning like Bible names did, but what does your name mean to God?” asked Pastor Davis. “When God thinks of you, what comes to his mind? Does he think ‘patience’ or ‘my faithful servant’? Or does he think ‘complainer’ or ‘grouchy’?”

Hey, thought Kendra, I’m going to quit fussing about not having an earthly meaning for my name. Instead, I’ll work on living the way God wants me to. What he thinks of me is what’s really important. REP

HOW ABOUT YOU?

As you read today’s Scripture, did you notice that God knows you by name—that you’re not just one of the crowd? Do you know what your name means? If so, maybe you’ll want to live up to its meaning. But perhaps you have a “different” name, one that has no meaning. No matter. Your name can be a good name as you choose to love God and live as he wants you to live.
