Giants

Giants

What can I do when I’m surrounded by giant problems?

God’s Response

[Goliath] cursed David by the names of his gods. . . . David shouted in reply, “You come to me with sword, spear, and javelin, but I come to you in the name of the LORD Almighty—the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied. Today the LORD will conquer you . . . and the whole world will know that there is a God in Israel! And everyone will know that the LORD does not need weapons to rescue his people. It is his battle, not ours. The LORD will give you to us!” 1 Samuel 17:43, 45-47

The story of David and Goliath has a theme of reality vs. distortion. The reality was that God had promised that his people would not lose their land if they followed him. The distortion was the large giant that seemed more real and immediate than God’s promise and presence. Fear can distort your view of reality and paralyze you. The giants in your path can appear more powerful than your Almighty God who promises to deliver you if you let him fight for you. Sooner or later you will face some kind of fearsome giant—an especially great temptation, guilt, sin, anger, anxiety, depression, disease, or other difficulty. Don’t let the size of the giant reduce your awareness of the size of your God!
