Overwhelming Worry

Overwhelming Worry

Where can I turn when worry overwhelms me?

God’s Response

I tell you, don’t worry about everyday life —whether you have enough food, drink, and clothes. Doesn’t life consist of more than food and clothing? Look at the birds. They don’t need to plant or harvest or put food in barns because your heavenly Father feeds them. And you are far more valuable to him than they are. Can all your worries add a single moment to your life? Of course not. . . . Your heavenly Father already knows all your needs, and he will give you all you need from day to day if you live for him and make the Kingdom of God your primary concern. Matthew 6:25-27, 32-33

Jesus’ words suggest three questions you can ask yourself when you start to worry about something: (1) Is it important? Many of our anxieties revolve around issues that are even less important than food and clothing. (2) Is it helpful? Worrying is useless; in fact, it’s usually counterproductive. (3) Who is in charge? God is in control, and your heavenly Father delights to meet your needs. As you ask and answer these questions, your anxiety will diminish.

God’s Promise

Give your burdens to the LORD, and he will take care of you. Psalm 55:22
