Where Are You Headed?
Where Are You Headed?
You are citizens along with all of God’s holy people. You are members of God’s family.
Ephesians 2:19
I have a confession to make: I really don’t enjoy exercising this side of heaven. I know that the Lord wants us to be good stewards of the bodies He has given us. It’s not that I mind the actual physical exertion part. The problem is that I only like to get ready once per day! The thought of driving somewhere in workout wear, exercising, then showering and changing into regular clothes seems like too much of a rigmarole to me. Plus, if I were in a class with others I hadn’t seen in a while, I’d want to know what God was doing in their lives, and I’d be more interested in reaching out to them than getting my heart rate up.
But guess what? In midlife, by God’s grace, I’ve discovered that I am motivated to walk several miles if I have a destination. When a new sidewalk was put in near my neighborhood, I discovered that it conveniently led to the coffee shop a mile and a half away. I sometimes enjoy the three-mile round-trip trek for coffee and a quiet bench with my teeny Bible—the perfect size for a hand weight. Hallelujah! I think I may have found an exercise plan that works for me. It was all about the destination.
More crucial than a geographical destination is our eternal destination. When we die, we are all headed somewhere, whether we believe it or not. If we believe in Christ, we are already citizens of heaven while journeying here on earth. We are being made ready for our heavenly home through trusting in Him.
Are you exercising your heavenly citizenship while here on earth? Remind yourself of your true home with Jesus and live your life right now as if you’re homeward bound.
