Service Groups

The more you start branching out beyond your inner circle of relationship by opening your home, joining a church, and spending time with a small group, you’ll discover a pattern: one of the chief components of engaging in community is service.

You serve those invited into your home. Once you join a church, you’ll be asked to serve. Support groups serve by their very nature. The phrase community service was not created out of thin air.

So make sure you find ways to serve in the communities you frequent. Better still, join communities whose sole purpose is service. Volunteer at a local mission. Join a group of mentors for disadvantaged children or adults. Join groups such as Habitat for Humanity to build houses for those in need.

It’s one thing to serve alone. It’s quite another to serve shoulder-to-shoulder with others. Relationship rises to a whole new level when you start working together for what matters.

In everything I did, I showed you that by this kind of hard work we must help the weak, remembering the words the Lord Jesus himself said: “It is more blessed to give than to receive.” —Acts 20:35
