When There’s A Hole In Your Soul

When There’s a Hole in Your Soul

WE ALL HAVE good days and bad days, right? But have you ever had an entire bad year? I remember one stretch of about three years when, for the life of me, I couldn’t get out of my own way. Everywhere I went and everything I touched ended in disaster.

Looking back now, I see that during that three-year stint, I had a hole in my soul. Of course, no one was brave enough to point this out to me at the time. I don’t know if anyone even hinted to me that my situation might be self-induced or that I was headed down a path of self-destruction. I had become a regular little rainmaker of difficulties. Being the overachiever that I am—let me tell you—I had produced a real frog-strangler! (For my girlfriends in states east of the Mississippi and west of the Rockies, that means a hard rain.)

So what is a hole in your soul? It is a deep, dark well that resides in the core of your being. And the harder you work to fill it with stuff, the bigger the doggone thing gets! Maybe you know what I’m talking about. Perhaps you’ve even tried to fill your hole with

Clothes. But standing in your closet, you realize that designer suit doesn’t bring you the contentment you thought it would—it just makes your butt look big!

Romance. But after six months, you see the situation for what it is. Your poor attempt to use him to fill your void has failed miserably and now you have to deal with him and a hole in your soul!

Status. But if that’s working, why are you most lonely when you’re surrounded by friends and associates who so respect you?

Wine. Yes. This works pretty well for about three hours. And then the hole starts growing, getting bigger and bigger and bigger . . . along with your headache.

How are you filling your soul? With food? work? a baby? busyness?

Looking back at my disaster years, I realize that most of my poor—and sometimes sinful—choices were made because I didn’t trust that God had my best interest in mind. I thought I could choose those things that would fill the hole in my soul, but I always chose wrong.

And this same God who takes care of me will supply all your needs from his glorious riches, which have been given to us in Christ Jesus. (Philippians 4:19)

Is it time for you to get whole in your soul to find uncommon joy? Choose Christ.
